Where do I begin to tell you how AMAZING these homemade Twix bars are?!? OMG they are just as good as the real thing...dare I say it, maybe even better?!? Knowing that there is no added preservatives alone makes me favor this recipe any day!
The combination of dark chocolate, shortbread cookie, and caramel is incredible. This recipe is so much fun to make and the kids will love to help! For this recipe you will need a silicone candy/chocolate mold. (Amazon has great options.)
Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Rest time: 1 hour 20 minutes
Ingredients:
For the shortbread cookie:
-5 1/2 tablespoons salted butter (softened)
-3/4 cup & 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
-1/4 cup granulated sugar
-1/8 teaspoon salt
For the Caramel Layer:
-5 oz bag Werther's Original Chewy Caramels
(You can also make homemade caramel sauce, just didn't have time today :)
-1 tablespoon heavy cream
Chocolate Layer:
-1 11.5oz bag Dark Chocolate Chips (I love Guittard)
Next Step:
-Preheat oven to 350 F and layer an 8x8 baking dish with parchment paper. Take out a silicone candy square or rectangular mold. For this recipe I used square, but either will work.
-In a medium size mixing bowl combine the butter and sugar and mix with a hand or stand mixer.
-Then add in the flour and salt and mix until crumbly.
-Pour the mixture into the baking dish and press down to form an even layer.
-Bake for 15 minutes or until it turns a light golden brown along the edges.
-Set aside to let cool.
-Once cooled slice the shortbread cookie into bitesize pieces that will fit your mold shape. Use a sharp knife so it doesn't crumble. Set aside.
-Pour the chocolate chips into a glass bowl and microwave in 25 second increments until the chocolate has melted. Be sure to stir frequently so the chocolate doesn't burn. Set aside.
-In another glass microwave safe bowl take the wrappers off all of the caramel candies and put into your bowl. Add the heavy cream and microwave in 25 second increments until the caramel has melted. You will have to stir to completely combine the heavy cream. If it looks too thick, you can add another teaspoon of heavy cream. Set aside.
-Take your silicone mold and add a heaping teaspoon of melted chocolate to the bottom of each mold. Gently push it around the bottom and sides of the mold to distribute evenly.
-Then add the shortbread cookie on top of the melted chocolate and gently push down.
-The next step is to add a small dollop (around a teaspoon) of melted caramel on top of the cookie.
-Top off with 3/4 teaspoon of melted chocolate. Gently shake to spread out the chocolate all over the top. If the top is not completely covered, add a little more chocolate.
-Refrigerate for 1 hour. (uncovered)
-Remove the Twix from the mold.
-Serve and ENJOY!!
